7th Heaven Season 1 - Episode 2: Family Secrets

Happy chews Eric's shoe.

Simon scolds Happy and says they will be in trouble when Eric learns Happy is pregnant.

Annie's parents are getting ready to leave, and Annie is visibly upset. She tries to convince them to stay and for her mom to get treatment there in California, but they say no, but promise to return in a couple weeks.

Eric and Annie are not looking forward to telling the children, and Eric says they will tell the kids "when the time's right."

The theme song plays, and the opening credits come up.

Mary and Lucy bring the dishes to Simon, who is washing them. The phone rings and Matt asks if anyone is expecting a call. He asks Ruthie if Mary is waiting for Jeff to call. Ruthie zips her lips. (That pretty much answers Matt's question, Ruthie, but good try).

Mary and Lucy discuss having only one phone line and no cell phones.

Mary:  "Let's face it, as long as Dad is a minister, we're never going to have normal lives."

When Lucy mentions that someone might call her but doesn't say, Mary, threatens to tickle Lucy, who needs to pee. She hopes Jimmy Moon (Matthew Linville) will call her because he's cute. Mary doesn't want Lucy's guy thing to interfere with her guy thing. At that moment, her "guy" calls.

Matt (to his mother):  "I am not going off to war. I am just going to the library." (Matt leaves).

Simon wakes up, and Matt's bed hasn't been slept in. Eric knows this too and is waiting. He is livid that Matt was out all night, missing curfew. He tells his parents he went to see a friend who has a "female problem." Eric grounds him.

Lucy and Mary try to figure out what happened. Ruthie comes into their room, asking who is in trouble. She knows someone is cause their dad forgets to say, "Good morning, pumpkin," when someone is in trouble.

Simon is thrilled that Matt is in trouble because it's a great time to tell their parents about Happy. Matt tells him not to give bad news on top of bad news. He tells them to wait for good news and then tell them.

Simon: I hope they get some good news soon."

He then asks Matt if he kissed the girl.

Ruthie is working on learning her alphabet with Annie. (Did you know L-M-N-O is actually four separate letters)?'

Eric is trying to find his shoe, but he can't find his keys, wedding ring, or a list. He and Annie start kissing, and Annie ruins the moment by bringing Matt up. She says he doesn't believe Matt is having sex because of intuition and the fact she flat out asked Matt, and he told her no. (Eric isn't too convinced, which is strange because teenagers never lie to their parents about having sex).

At school, Matt and Jeff are talking. Jeff doesn't understand why Matt doesn't want him to date Mary.

Eric is at the hospital and has his shoe off because his foot hurts from the shoes. He meets a nurse that has never seen him around. The nurse does not believe he is married or a reverend. However, she offers to take his shoes to get repaired across the street. (Eric is totally clueless about women who flirt with him).

Back at school, Lucy is totally ignored by Jimmy Moon. But then he looks back, and they smile at each other.

That's a good time to cut away to the kids all home after school. Simon is trying hard to hide the fact Happy is pregnant and offers not only to take her outside but also Ruthie.

Annie reminds Matt that he is grounded. She tries to get him to tell her about the girl he was with. He finally says he will "bring her by sometime." Matt leaves to go to the library.

Annie: "See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya." (Dork alert).

Outside, Simon is using Ruthie to help train Happy again. He then sees that Happy has another one of his dad's shoes. He says, "the two of you are ruining me."

The phone rings and Annie answers it. It's Renee (Ashley Levitch), the woman he was with last night. She invites Renee over for dinner. Eric returns home without shoes because the shoe place was closed for the weekend. (Why he didn't bring the shoes back instead of leaving them, I am not sure). As she tells Eric that she invited Matt's friend over, Matt comes back and is upset that Annie asked Renee over. He is about to tell them something when a pregnant Renee comes in after Simon opens the door. (Uh oh, Renee gave away the surprise Matt was going to share).

Simon asks if she and Matt are having the baby. Renee ensures them all that it's her baby, not Matt's. (Much to Annie and Eric's relief). Simon decides this is good news and lets them know Happy is pregnant and has been eating Eric's shoes.

At dinner, Simon is asking Renee questions related to the pregnancy. Matt tells Eric that Renee's mom left years ago, and her dad wants nothing to do with her.

Meanwhile, upstairs, Lucy and Mary are making fun of Renee being seventeen and pregnant. The phone rings. Mary comes down yelling at Matt for telling Jeff she was using him to get kissed. She denies it, and Eric tells her that if she's not using Jeff, she should tell him. Matt is upset that Eric hasn't learned "anything from this whole Renee thing."

Annie is in the kitchen talking with Renee. She tells Annie that they used protection but obviously not correctly. (Even correctly, it doesn't always work). She then asks Annie if having a baby hurts.

Annie: I don't think I'll answer that question, but it does help if you're prepared.

Renee tells her she never expected to be an unwed teen mother.

Eric goes to Renee's father, Mr. Nicholson (Chris Bemis), and tries to talk to him.

Mr. Nicholson: I don't have a daughter.

He shuts the door in Eric's face. Eric doesn't give up easily, however.

Simon shows Annie the chewed-up shoes at home and says he will find a way to pay for them all.

Matt and Annie are sitting at the table. Annie learns that her son drinks coffee and is doing very well in English Literature. Now she understands why he's been going to the library. She tells Matt about his terminally ill grandmother.

Matt talks to Eric and tells him that they shouldn't tell the other children. (It seems this family has three parents).

Back at school, Mary and Jeff make a no-kissing date. (Anyone else not expect that to go as planned)?

Eric talks to who he believes is the baby's father into getting a job to help support the baby.

Eric: You're gonna have a daughter.

Jimmy Moon asks Lucy if she likes him. Lucy doesn't reply.

Jimmy: Yeah yeah, I don't like you either. It's just people playing a joke on us.

Simon tells Matt that Matt should marry Renee. Matt says she needs someone responsible, and Simon agrees that she can't marry Matt because he's not responsible.

A teen boy comes to the house, and Eric learns the one he talked to was not the father but the Baby Daddy's brother.

Lucy is crying because Jimmy doesn't like her.

Mary: Then he's the moron, not you. (I know they wanted to introduce Jimmy onto the show, but this subplot is dumb).

Simon wants to have a lemonade stand to earn money for Eric's shoe repayment. Eric tells him to do community service to work the debt off. Simon says he will give lemonade away because if he does it at church, "maybe so many people won't go home."

Matt tries to get out of the house, asking to go to the library. However, the paper he was working on was finished. Eric tells Matt that Matt can't go out for three weeks unless Matt wants to play pool. Matt says he's not that desperate.

Jimmy comes to the house. Lucy tells him that he just came over for some homework.

Eric: You know what we have in common?
Lucy: What?
Eric: Neither of us is good at not telling the truth.

He goes down to spy on Mary and Jeff.

Matt is on the phone with his grandmother. Eric goes to stop outside when he sees Jeff and Mary kissing. He closes the door, and they go back to kissing.

Simon sets his free lemonade stand up, explaining to a woman that his dad needs shoes. She misunderstands and thinks that the reverend can't afford to buy his own shoes. Renee has joined the church choir. It turns out Renee has a beautiful voice.

Renee's father has come to the church, and Eric is smiling.

The closing credits come up.

(The subplot was dumb. The regular plot was just okay, not really great).
