7th Heaven: Season 3 - Episode 8: No Sex, Some Drugs and a Little Rock 'N' Roll

Annie (Catherine Hicks) practices the piano.

Matt and Simon are studying in the kitchen. Matt gets coffee, and Simon tells him he wants some, but Matt says it's not for kids. Lucy is talking to Jordan on the phone in the living room while her mother practices the piano. Annie gets frustrated. Lucy hangs up the phone, and Annie tells her she can't always be on the phone because there could be an emergency for Eric. (It amazes me that in the year 1996, they do not have call waiting). Lucy gets upset and goes to her room. Ruthie comes in and sits on the piano bench next to her mother. She is chewing gum like a cow, and Annie makes her spit the gum out. Eric comes in next and tells her his old high school band is coming to Glen Oak. He tells her the band has an RV.  The band is staying at the Camden house but in the RV, not the actual house.

Eric: I would have called you, but the line's been busy.
Annie: Lucy!

The theme song plays, and the opening credits come up.

Annie is making the kids lunches for school. She puts money in their bags. Mary tells Annie she has practice after school. Matt comes into the kitchen looking half-asleep. He has been up all night studying for his poly-sci exam. Simon comes into the kitchen and pours himself some coffee. Annie asks him when he started drinking coffee. He tells her he's so tired he doesn't know what he's doing. Ruthie tells Annie that Simon was up all night talking. (They have different rooms now, so who was he talking to)? Simon says he forgot something and runs out of the kitchen. Matt follows him.

Outside the kitchen, Matt tells Simon that coffee is addictive. Simon thinks he is now addicted and he's only twelve.

Annie hands the children their lunches as they head out the door. She picks up the phone and says, "Lucy." Lucy comes running and gets her lunch bag. She tells Annie she was talking to Jordan because school is twenty minutes away. (Been there, done that when I was a teen).

After Lucy leaves, Annie goes into Eric's office. He is looking at old pictures of his band members from high school. He tells Annie he booked a Camper Cove space for them. She thanks him because she doesn't want house guests, even ones who sleep outside in an RV.

Simon sneaks into the faculty lounge to get coffee. There is a teacher sleeping in the lounge.

Matt runs into his friend Scott (Michael Sullivan) on campus. Matt tells him he doesn't know how much longer he can stay awake. Scott offers him some type of herbal non-drug pills to help him stay awake. He tells Matt it's as natural and legal as water.

The children return home from school. Simon is acting jittery, and Ruthie is chewing gum. She refuses to tell her parents where she keeps getting the gum. Lucy comes inside, and Annie confronts her about the phone bill.

There is a knock on the door, and it's Eric's old band members: Ray (Keith Allison), Don (David Glen Eisley), and Chris (Peter Tork). (If you don't recognise the names, Keith Allison was a singer and songwriter with the band Paul Revere & the Raiders; David Glen Eisley is a singer who has been with multiple lands including Sorcery, Giuffria and Dirty White Boy; Peter Tork was the keyboard and bass player with The Monkees). Don apologizes to them for showing up unannounced but the phone was busy every time they tried to call.

Annie (to Lucy): Out of control.

Eric tells them about the campsite. Annie tells them to just put the van in the driveway.

Mary is playing basketball with some of the girls on her team. Diane (Alexander Glazer) causes Mary to fall and apologizes. The two girls are sitting on a bench and some pills fall out of Diane's bag. Mary picks them up.

Diane: They're not steroids. They're natural energy boosters. My father buys them for me at a health-food store. A lot of girls on the team are using them.
Mary: Really?
Diane: Yeah. They give you a competitive edge.

She offers some to Mary, but Mary shakes her head no.

Diane: They really do make a big difference.

Music plays as Mary looks at her.

That night at the house, Ruthie is chewing gum and sees that Simon has coffee in a thermos. She threatens to tell on him, and he explains to his little sister he is addicted.

Ruthie: That's the saddest thing I ever heard. Now get out of my way, I have to tell on you.

Simon begs her not to tell, and he offers to pay her, but she has to do a favor for him. He whispers something in her ear. (He could have just threatened to tell on her since she was chewing gum).

Eric and his former band members are jammin' in the living room. Eric can't believe the other three stayed together and tour now. Annie comes in to see if any of them need a refill. She asks about their wives and kids. They tell her they have ex-wives and no kids.

Ray: You can't blame the overpopulation of the planet on us. (They laugh but he notices the look on the pregnant Annie's face). Sorry.

Annie goes into the kitchen. Lucy comes down and asks her mother, "when are Dad's weirdo friends leaving?" Annie tells her that they are there because they couldn't call since Lucy is always on the phone. She puts Lucy on phone restriction for the weekend. Lucy wants them to get a second phone line.

Lucy and Annie leave the kitchen and Ruthie sneaks in to fill Simon's thermos with more coffee. (I love how Simon is acting like a total addict. It's amazing what the power of suggestion can do).

Mary asks if she can go over to Diane's to play basketball. Annie lets her go since she doesn't need a ride.

Eric comes up and tells Annie he can't believe how the other guys really haven't changed since high school with, "no real jobs, no real responsibilities, no real lives."

Mary goes into Matt's room and sees the energy pills on his desk. When he comes into his room, she  tells him, "Mom wants you to drive me to Diane's." She says she has a ride back, but "no one wants to talk to Mom or Dad." Matt takes her.

Eric is outside with sheets and knocks on the van door. He tells them Annie thought they could use the sheets. He can tell they were smoking while in their van; he assumes it was pot. They deny smoking anything. Eric tells him that his best friend is a police officer. He also informs them that they have a zero-tolerance drug policy at the Camden house.

Annie knocks on the door to Ruthie's or Simon's room and Ruthie says she wasn't drinking the coffee she only stole it for Simon. Simon gets angry with Ruthie. Lucy walks by talking on the phone. Annie takes the phone way.

Annie: Goodbye, Jordan.
Lucy: I had to call him to tell hin I couldn't call him.

Annie makes Ruthie spit out her gum.

Annie: You no coffee, you know gum and you know phone. Got it?

She leaves and the kids look at each other.

Mary and Diane are playing one-on-one basketball. Mary tells her how great the pills are, but she can't get her hands to stop shaking.

Diane: You'll get used to that. (Why would you want to)?

Outside at the house, Ruthie and Simon are playing hackie sack with Eric's former band members. Annie is watching through the window looking delighted. Eric comes over to the window and asks him why he's not out there. Eric tells her they were burning incense in the van but his wife doesn't seem phased by it. She asks her husband to take a mug up to Matt's room.

Ruthie comes in and says she likes her dad's friends. She asks who Keith Moon is  and wants to know if he's coming over. Annie tells her that Keith Moon was in the band The Who. She also tells her daughter that he died from a drug overdose. As Ruthie heads back outside, Annie tells her "spit it out."

Ruthie: How did you know?
Annie: I have eyes in the back of my head.

Lucy comes into the kitchen and Annie shows her a beeper and asks her who's it is. At first Lucy acts dumb, but when Annie threatens to throw it out she tells her it was Jordan's and he loaned it to her.

Annie: When I said no phones I meant all forms of of wireless communication including beepers.
Lucy: How'd you learn to be so cruel?
Annie: It's in the Mommy Manuel between crafts and cuddling.

Annie tries to hug Lucy, but Lucy avoids it and leaves. (No matter how upset I am with someone, I will never refuse a hug. My theory is if you can hug you can't hate).

Ruthie comes in and asks if Jimi Hendrix is also dead. Annie shakes her head yes.

Ruthie: Do you think Daddy's friends know anyone who is still alive?

Eric goes into Matt's room. Matt is reading a book (and by reading I mean he's asleep on the bed, holding his book). Eric sees the bottle of energy pills and yells asking what Matt is doing with it. Matt tells him he got it from a friend, and was told they're natural.

Eric: Not everything is natural is good for you, okay? Cocaine is extracted from the cocoa plant, heroin and morphine comne from natural plants and extracts. Natural doens't always mean good.
Matt: Dad calm down. Check the bottle, it's sealed. I didn't take any. I was just looking for a way to stay awake so I could keep studying.

Eric tells him it's not far from being meth. Matt doesn't understand why health stores sell them if they are dangerous. Eric explains that it is classified as a food not a drug, but in thirteen states it is illegal.

Mary over heards them talking and comes into Matt's room. She tells them that she took some of those pills. She tells her dad she didn't get them from Matt, but from Diane who got them from her father. Eric tells Matt to throw the piolls away, and Matt is more than happy to do so.

Mary calls Diane and tells her that people die from taking the pills. Diane tells her she's been taking them for over six months and has been fine. Matt comes into check on Mary. Mary is upset because she saw Matt had them and decided they were okay. Matt tells her he is sorry.

The younger three are outside on the steps. Simon says they can form a support group to help each other not do what their mother banned them from doing. Lucy leaves since she can't use the phone to call when she needs support. Ruthie says she didn't give anything up so she doesn't want to join either then she leaves Simon as well.

Simon walks over to Happy and the bandmembers come out. Simon tells them no one will join his support club. They tell Simon they are familiar with those kind of clubs.

The three musicians come into the kitchen and tell Annie that Simon is a "cool little dude." They tell her that they know Eric isn't interested in hanging out with them.

Eric is at Diane's house talking to her father (Larry Joshua). Eric tells him he's upset about the pills Mary got from Diane. Her dad tells Eric he's overreacting because they are all safe. Eric tells him he's wrong, and goes on to explain why he is wrong. Diane's father says he will look into what Eric said but isn't promising not to take anything. Diane comes in and apoligizess to Eric for giving the pills to Mary. After Eric leaves, Diane's father tells Diane he told Eric what he wanted to hear do Eric would leave gthem alone.

Annie is trying to find something to wear. Ruthie comes into her parents bedroom and asks if Jim Morrison, Jerry Garcia, and Janis Joplin all died from drugs. Annie tells her yes to all three. Ruthie tells her that Simon says people die from addictions. Ruthie tells her that Simon told her they all started with a cup of coffee. Eric comes in as Ruthie is leaving. Annie tells her Simon needs to quit hanging out with the band. She asks Eric how it went over at Diane's and he tells her what happened. Mary comes in from the hall and Eric tells her that he thinks Diane's father just told him what he thought Eric wanted to hear. Mary wants to talk to Diane, and Eric doens't think it's a good idea, but Annie says Mary has to do it. Mary says she will try  not to miss her mother's jamming with the band. Eric is suprised.

Matt comes down into the kitchen. Simon is there and tells him, "Hello, my name is Simon Camden, and I'm a coffee-holic.

Matt goes over to the counter and ours some coffee and makes Simon drink it. Simon spits it out and asks him what it is. Matt tells him coffee and offers him more, and Simon tells him, "No, never!"

Ruthie comes down to the kitchen.

Simon: I'm a recovered coffee drinker! Isnt' that great?
Ruthie: Good. Your teeth are turning yellow, and your breath smells worse than it usually does. (to Matt) Do you have any gum.
Simon: Mom said you werne't supposed to chew gum anymore.
Ruthie: Buddy, what Mommy doens't know won't hurt me.

Matt gives her some gum, and asks her if she knows what's in gum to make it chewy. She tells him no.

Matt: That's good becuase if you knew you might not be able to enjoy it.
Ruthie: Okay, what do they put in gum to make it chewy.
(Matt whispers in her ear).
Ruthie: I've chewed my last chew.

Eric comes into the kitchen and Matt says he was "righting some wrongs." Eric says they knew he is why Simon started to drink coffee, and by the process of elimination figured out he was the one giving Ruthie the gum. Eric tells Matt the other kids look up to him. Matt tells Eric he's sorry about the pills.

Lucy goes into her parents bedroom and tells Annie she can't handle not using the phone. Annie tells her that as of Wednesday they will be "a two-line family." Lucy doens't care about why they decided to get another line, she is just happy that they are getting it. Annie tells her that Lucy is not getting the number of the second line. Lucy screams.

Eric comes into the van and apologizes for being a bad host. Eric sees them smoking cigarettes, and apoligizes for thinking they were smoking pot earlier. They tell him that a lot of people think they use drugs, but they got high on the music. They tell Eric they are happy and Eric says he's happy with his life, but still wants to play with them tonight.

The kids, minus Mary, are listening to the band play (with Annie). Ruthie is dancing.

Simon: Now I know what Mick Jagger's kids feel like.
Lucy: Embarrassed?
Matt: Luckily, we took separate cars.
Lucy: Good, because I didn't bring my lighter for the encore.
Simon: And what's with Ruthie?
Lucy: Blame it on The Spice Girls.
Simon: Girl power!

The band continues performing the song "Sunshine of Your Love."

Mary arrives at the baskeball court and finds Diane. She tells Diane she can't make her do anything, but isn't going to to stand by while she hurts herself. She starts to leave and Diane stops her. She tells Mary that if Mary quits bugging her, after the season is over she will stop using the pills. Mary invites Diane to see Annie play with the band. Diane wants to play a game of 21 first.

They start playing and Diane collapses on the court.

Eric and Annie are in the car and Annie says she can't believe Mary missed the show. Eric says he hopes things went well with Diane. They see an ambulance and stop to see what was going on.

They see Mary who is crying.

Mary: Diane collapsed. We were playing, and she took a shot and then I called 911. And they wouldn't tell me anything, and I don't know how she is. They've had her for so long.

Eric goes over to the ambulance, and Annie hugs Mary. Diane's father looks at Eric and then gets into the ambulance with his daughter.

Eric returns to Annie and Mary.

Mary: She'll be okay, right?
Eric: Yeah, but Diane had a massive heart attack. They finally got her stable enough. They're gonna take her to the hospital.
Mary: But she's gonna be okay, she's gonna be able to play basketball again.
Eric: Right now, they're just happy she's gonna make it.

Annie and Eric hug Mary as the ambulance leaves. Mary continues to cry.

The closing credits come up.
