7th Heaven: Season 5 - Episode13: Kiss

Mike (Jeremy/Jer Adrianne Lelliott) and Lucy (Beverly Mitchell) discuss their first kiss.

Mike and Lucy are outside the house. They kiss because Lucy got her acceptance letter to school and agreed that would be when they'd share their first kiss.  However, Mike tells her it's like kissing his sister. She is insulted and tries two more times before going into the house upset.

The opening credits come up and the theme song plays.

Lucy searches the house for her mother. She runs upstairs, and then back downstairs. Her father returns home and she comes into the kitchen. He tells her that he saw Mike leaving, and she says that it was and she needs to talk to her mom about a guy thing.

Eric catches her upstairs again and tells her he is a guy; therefore he understands guy things. So she explains to him that Mike says kissing her is like kissing his sister.

Eric: That's great!
Lucy sighs in exasperation.
Eric: That's great for me, not for you.

Lucy finds her mother in the bathroom. Her mother is giving the twins a bath and trying to explain to them that she is their mother. Annie explains that the twins are calling Ruthie "Mama." Lucy does not see what the big deal is.

Annie: I'm the mama. I'm the woman who carried them around for nine months and gave birth to them. There is only one mama and I'm it!
Lucy: Okay, you're the mama.

Annie asks Lucy if something is wrong, and Lucy says it's just a guy thing, and it can wait.

Lucy leaves the bathroom.

Ruthie is sitting on the hallway stairs outside the bathroom and asks her sister how things are going in the bathroom. Lucy asks why she cares, and Ruthie tells her no reason. Then she tells Lucy she offered to help but their mom said she didn't want help.

Matt enters the house and sees Robbie heading out to play pool with John. He invites Matt to join them. Matt is speaking in staccato as he tries to figure out why John would invite Robbie out. He turns down the invitation and goes out to Simon's room. (Matt sounds like he's losing it here).

He asks Simon what he's doing, and Simon sarcastically tells him he is "running the last lap of the Indy 500," as he sits there reading a book.

Matt: Oh, so they teach sarcasm in high school now.
Simon: My favorite class.
Matt: Why do you have to be such a jerk?
Simon: Ouch.

Matt leaves the room, then returns to ask why Robbie doesn't leave.  He says that Robbie has a job and enough money, but Simon points out that Robbie likes living at the Camden house. Matt says that Robbie is taking over his family and friends. Simon tells him that he's a nut job. Matt asks him to go and play pool, but Simon tells him he has a test to study for. So they decided to go tomorrow. Matt asks him again to go tonight, and Simon says again that he can't.

Matt: Good if school is more important than family then study, study hard; see where it gets you. A room with your sister's ex-boyfriend, and a date with your brother on a Friday night.

He leaves and sees Ruthie in the hall.

Matt: Do you know who your little friend Robbie is out with?
Ruthie shakes her head.
Matt: John. My best friend, John.
Ruthie: That's probably because he likes Robbie better. (Ruthie has a way of making her big brother feel better...or maybe it's worse...it's one of those. lol).

John and Robbie are at the pool hall. John is telling Robbie about living with Priscilla. John says the place is much cleaner than when Matt was there, and she makes a lot for him. Robbie senses from how he talks about it that he's unhappy and tells him to talk to her.

John: The Camden family is really rubbing off on you.

Eric comes into Simon's room and asks what he's doing. Simon holds up his book.

Simon: Three guesses.
Eric: You have a test?
Simon: I don't study just for the fun of it.

Eric offers to help him and make flash cards. Simon tells him it's Shakespeare, and flashcards won't help. He suggests he goes with Matt to play pool. Eric searches for Matt and asks him if he wants to play pool. Matt says he changed his mind and doesn't want to do anything. He tells him that Robbie intercepted his call and stole his best friend. Eric accuses his son of being jealous.

Eric goes to Lucy and Ruthie's room. He apologizes to her for earlier, and Ruthie says that Lucy is fine. Their father is surprised Ruthie talked to Lucy.

Ruthie: What? Do you think I can't talk?

The phone rings, and Lucy answers it. It's Mike. He apologizes again and offers to fix her up; if she fixes him up with Elaina  Casey. She reluctantly agrees. Eric comes back in when she hangs up, and Lucy tells him that she's fixing Mike up, and Mike is fixing her up.

Eric: Well, that's interesting...you can always tell what someone really thinks of you by who they fix you with. You know what I mean?

Annie is in the nursery with the twins trying to get them to call her "Mama," or even "Mom."  She goes to her and Eric's bedroom. Eric is lying on the bed. She asks Eric what's wrong, and he says nothing really, and she says that's good because he can't be upset when she is. He tells her that the kids are growing up.

Annie: And they're not calling me Mama.

She goes on about how all the other kids always call her Mama and then says she shouldn't have gone to school and she is away too much.

Annie: I am a very bad mama, bad mama!

Eric hugs his wife.

John returns to his apartment and sees Priscilla has the place looking immaculate. John looks bothered by the apartment as he hugs her.

Ruthie is in the nursery with the twins. She asks the twins, "Who am I?" The boys yell "Mama" and Ruthie gives them candy. Simon sees this from the door.

The next morning, the twins are in their high chairs. They ignore Annie and then see Ruthie and yell "Mama." Annie is visibly upset. Ruthie leaves because her ride has arrived. Eric comes down and asks his wife if the boys called her Mama. She glares at him and walks away.

Eric: Nice talking to you.

Eric puts on his coat as he tells the twins about breakfast being the day's most important meal. He gives the twins a cookie, and they call him "Mama." (Keep this in mind for later). Eric motions for them to stop.

John sees Matt at the hospital. He says hi, but Matt ignores him. He asks Matt what is wrong, and Matt complains about staying home with Hello Kitty last night while John goes out with Robbie.

Lucy goes over to Elaina (Heather Ball) in the hallway at school and introduces herself. She tells Elaina that Mike Pierce wants to go out with her. Lucy explains that Mike has been trying to ask her out, but she always runs from him. Elaina thinks it's a prank because people have pranked her like that before.  Lucy assures her it's not a prank, and Elaina agrees to go out with him. She says Mike seems like a nice guy and has so many good traits such as being smart, playing the piano, and having a lot of character. Elaina then remembers Lucy was going out with Mike and asks Lucy about it. Lucy explains they were but discovered they don't have any chemistry, so they are just good friends.

Simon sees Lucy right after Elaina leaves her. He sees what Elaina looks like (she has acne), and tells Lucy obviously, Mike isn't overly concerned about looks. (I find this rather stupid since about half or so of teenagers have acne issues. This isn't like some horrific thing that only one random person in high school has that no other teenager has ever been through). This fact only makes him respect Mike even more. Simon tells Lucy she'll never find another Mike Pierce on the planet and shouldn't have let him go. Lucy agrees and says she will learn from her mistake and move on.

Eric is at the hospital and asks Matt if he wants to get a cup of coffee. Matt says he doesn't have time and asks him what he wants. Eric tells his son that all the kids always go to their mother with all their problems. Matt says he's jealous of their mother. Eric says he just needed to say it out loud and also, hoped it would get Matt to talk about his jealousy of Robbie. Matt denies the jealousy. Then, says that he is jealous of John.

Eric: I'm starting to feel like Lucy did at thirteen.
Matt: Yeah, I am, too. Only now, of course, Lucy is well more confident than either of us.
Eric: Nice talking to you.
Matt: Same here.
Eric: And let us never speak of these things again.
Matt (whispers): Yes never.

Annie is in the kitchen with Ruthie, Sam, and David. The twins are in their high chairs and Annie is begging them to call her "Mama." (Today kids, Mama is gonna teach you all about being pathetic). Ruthie asks if any of the other kids ever called any of the other kids older than them "Mama." Annie denies it. She also denies that it is bothering her that the boys are calling Ruthie "Mama." Ruthie goes upstairs, and Annie continues to beg the boys.

Lucy and Simon are leaving the school and run into Mike. Mike tells her about going out with Elaina. Simon goes to the car. Mike tells Lucy how great Elaina is, and then Lucy kisses him. Elaina sees it and runs back into the school upset. (Did anyone doubt Elaina was going to see that happen?)

Lucy: Now, that wasn't like kissing your sister. It wasn't, was it?
Mike: No, but...
Lucy: But, what?
Mike: I'm still going to go out with Elaina.
Lucy: But what about the kiss.
Mike: The kiss came too late. Sorry, Luce.

Mike leaves

Lucy (sighs): Yeah, me, too.

Later that evening, Mike shows up at the Camden house angry with Lucy. He asks her what she did because Elaina stood him up on their date. She says she didn't do anything, and then asks Simon if he said anything. Mike asks why Simon would say anything. Lucy explains that she told Simon about feeling jealous because she didn't realize what she had until it was gone.

Mike: No, I think it's more like, you didn't want something until someone else wanted it. You fix this Luce, or we're not gonna be friends.

Mike leaves the house.

Matt and Simon invite Robbie to play pool. (It seemed odd Matt would invite him, but it did help this scene so I guess, whatever). Robbie says it looks like a brother's night out and he doesn't want to interfere. Matt asks if John or his father said something said something to him. Robbie explains no one had to tell him that Matt was having issues with him because he's been acting more unfriendly and hostile than usual. (Which is scary.) Robbie explains he went with John because John really needed someone to talk to, and Matt was busy. They talk it out and Matt realizes that he needs to talk to John, so Simon suggests he go to the pool hall with Robbie, and Matt could join them after he goes and talks to John. Robbie tells  Simon to ask his mom just as Annie comes in.

Annie asks what they want, and when they tell her she tells them to go. Simon and Robbie leave. Matt asks his mother what's wrong and she says that Sam and David won't call her "Mama," but they call Ruthie "Mama." Matt asks her if she's jealous of Ruthie, and she says she's jealous of Eric. She explains that all the kids before Sam and David said, "Dada" first. However, Sam and David said "mama" first, but now they won't say it to her. Matt laughs.

Annie: I pour my soul out to you, and your response is laughter?
Matt: I'm laughing because you're jealous of Dad and Dad's jealous of you.

Matt tells her what Eric said about his father thinking the kids love her more. She explains that their father is busy helping everyone else, so she always helps the kids. Matt tells her to explain it to his father not to him.

Matt: On second thought, don't explain it to Dad. He told me not to say anything because being jealous made him feel so...Lucy. Really, he'd be upset with me if you said anything.

Annie says she will bring it up without making it look like she heard anything from Matt. Matt doesn't feel confident in this and decides to leave.

Robbie and Simon arrive at the pool hall. Simon sees Elaina, with her parents, introduces himself, and asks to speak to her. She agrees to speak to him. She says she saw Simon in the car and asks if he is in on the scam.

Simon explains that it's not a scam. He explains that Lucy was jealous of her because she made Mike sound so good and Mike was interested in Elaina, not Lucy. He further explains that Lucy sometimes lets her emotions get the best of her.

Simon: She does that sometimes. Not as much as she used to, but believe me, she's got some pretty big emotions.

He offers to have Robbie drive them back to the house so she can talk to Lucy and Mike. Elaina agrees to go but says she wants her parents to drive her over.

Eric is in his office at the house. Annie comes in and tells him that she's feeling overwhelmed with all the kids coming to her with their problems.

Eric: But I told Matt that my problem is that the kids aren't coming to me with their problems not that you're not coming to me with the kids' problems. But thanks for trying to make me feel better, Mama.
Annie: That's not funny!
Eric: Come on. We are both being a little over-sensitive; aren't we? (Yep).

He says that with all that has happened with Mary, they are feeling insecure as parents and probably will continue to do so until things get better with Mary. Annie agrees, but still says that it bothers her the boys won't call her "Mama."

They kiss and then start making out on his desk. Simon walks in and clears his throat.

Eric: It's polite to knock.
Simon: If you're gonna make out on top of the desk, it's polite to lock the door. (I think this is good advice for all parents).

Simon explains that he brought Elaina home to talk to Lucy. But Lucy is out looking for Elaine to talk to Mike. Eric asks if Simon needs help. Eric says it's right up his alley.

Ruthie is in the living room talking to Elaina. Ruthie must have asked her about the acne because Elaina was explaining to her about it. Ruthie tells her that Mike really likes her. Elaina asks her how she knows.

Ruthie: I know practically everything around here. I hear practically everything around here. I'm very quiet and sneaky, but I'm honest. (Let me explain my character to you directly, for those that have not been following the show).

Pricilla (Andrea C. Pearson) hears a knock on the door of the apartment Matt formally lived in with John. She answers and it's Matt. Matt asks her about the apartment and says John just hates it. He tells her that John likes sleeping up high so much, that he bought his bunk beds from his parents because John thinks the air was better up high.

Priscilla: Why does this make you so happy?
Matt: You're kidding, right?
Priscilla: No.
Matt: Because John's miserable.
Priscilla: And that makes you happy?

Matt explains how he's been jealous that John is getting married because he was scared his best friend would forget about him. However, now he knows John will never forget him.

Elaina tells Eric that she wants to be a dermatologist. And that the acne is really a blessing. He says that she doesn't need him, and Elaina says she doesn't but Simon asks him to talk and tell him her problems.

Lucy and Mike come in, and Eric leaves the three of them alone. Elaine tells them that she saw them kissing. Mike explains he was just receiving the kiss not doing the kiss. Lucy confesses it was all her fault and apologizes. Elaina explains that Simon explained everything and forgives Lucy. Mike tells Elaina she owes him an apology for standing him up. She says they could go get ice cream, and he says then they would have their date and therefore she doesn't owe him an apology after all. Elaina leaves. Mike thanks Lucy. She asks Mike if they are still friends.

Mike: Yeah, good friends.

Mike leaves. (Mike leaves a lot in this episode).

John returns home, and Priscilla starts yelling at him. John explains he loves her but isn't happy about the apartment. He says he should have talked to her; however, he didn't want to hurt her feelings. They make up and kiss.

Simon apologizes to Lucy for getting involved with her problems. Lucy tells him he was right, and she shouldn't have acted without thinking like she did. And she needs to get used to Simon giving good advice.

Annie hears the boys say "Mama" and runs into the bedroom yelling, "Why do they do this, someone please answer me, why do my babies keep calling Ruthie Mama?"

Simon and Lucy follow her into the nursery, and Simon tells her that Ruthie taught the twins to call her Mama by giving them a cookie every time they called her "Mama."  Ruthie looks nervous about being caught and then dashes out of the nursery. Annie runs after her.

Lucy: Why didn't you tell Mom about this sooner?
Simon: Because I didn't know that Sam and David calling Ruthie, "Mama" bothered her.

Matt arrives at the pool hall and asks Robbie where Simon is. Robbie explains that Simon left with a girl to go back to the house to talk to Lucy. Matt asks why Robbie stayed at the pool hall by himself all night. Robbie explains that he didn't want Matt to show up and not have anyone be there. Matt explains he was late because John wasn't at the apartment, so he went to the hospital, but John wasn't there either. John then comes into the pool hall and says he called the Camden house and Simon told him he could talk find them there, and he needs to speak with them both. They decided to play pool while they talked.

Matt: Oh, by the way, I just love what Priscilla's done with the apartment.
John: Me too.
Matt: Liar.

Annie is searching for Ruthie. She yells, "Come on out I know you're in here!" Ruthie comes out of the closet. She asks her mom how she knew she was there, and Annie says she didn't she was going into every room yelling the same thing knowing eventually she'd find the right room. She asks Ruthie why she taught the boys to call her, "Mama." She asked Ruthie if she was angry or felt left out because Annie was back in school. Ruthie explains it was a joke.

Ruthie: We spend plenty of time together. I like the time, and you like school.... honest. When I'm angry with people I tell them. (Annie you should know this quite well. Ruthie told you she hated you back in the season 2 episode, "I Hate You").

She explained that she was bored and was just having some fun. Annie tells her it was a good joke, and they both laugh. Then Annie suddenly stops laughing.

Annie: Don't ever do it again.

Lucy tells her Dad that she apologized to Mike and Elaina and they are now on their date. Rev. Camden tells her not to be too hard on herself because she righted her wrong. Lucy asks if he thinks she will ever find the right guy, and he assures her she will. She says she wants a guy for all her exciting events in her senior year.

Eric: When you do get a guy, he'll be the luckiest guy in the world, because he gets you.
Lucy: Thanks.

They hug. Annie walks by and sees them. She smiles and continues past them.

Mike and Elaina are on their date discussing how many kids they hope to have one day. They both want at least a dozen.

The doorbell rings at the Camden house. Lucy answers and it's Jeremy (David Scott Lago). He is the guy that Mike set Lucy up with. Jeremy apologizes for being late. He just got Mike's message; however, he didn't want her to think he was uninterested.

Jeremy: You're really pretty.
Lucy: There's a lot more to me than looks.
Jeremy: I bet there is.

Lucy invites him in for a cup of cocoa and they head toward the kitchen.

The closing credits come up.

(Overall, I thought this a pretty good episode. I am still seeing growth in Lucy. This one also shows some growth in Matt and Ruthie. Matt realizes how he's been acting toward Robbie, and why, but also realizes he is not alone in the jealousy world. Ruthie realizes her actions can and do affect others even when she doesn't mean for it to be harmful).
