It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Linus (voiced by Christopher Shea) and Lucy (voiced by Sally Dryer) go to the pumpkin patch to pick out a pumpkin.

Linus and Lucy Van Pelt go out to the pumpkin patch to get a pumpkin. Linus rolls it because it's so big, but then it runs him over. Lucy looks annoyed. Lucy cuts the top open and removes the seeds; Linus is upset that they killed it.

The kids are out with sheets on and get scared, and the opening credits come up

Snoopy is under a tree blowing a leaf that fell from a tree around. He blows it right onto a pile of leaves. Linus sees it, gets excited, and jumps into the lease, but the leaves stick to him and his lollipop. Charlie Brown (voiced by Peter Robbins) is annoyed he destroyed the leaf pile.

Lucy comes over with a football wanting Charlie Brown to kick it. He says he isn't going to do it since she always pulls it away. She tells him she won't because she has a signed document. Charlie Brown figured it was safe, but she pulls it away and tells him the document was never notarized. (He really is a blockhead).

Linus is writing to the great pumpkin. Charlie Brown asks him who he's writing, and Linus tells him about The Great Pumpkin. Linus tells him about the Great Pumpkin, and Charlie Brown asks him when he will stop believing in "something that isn't true." Linus says when Charlie Brown quits believing in Santa. Snoopy (voiced by Bill Mendelson) sees the letter and laughs at Linus. Snoopy goes into the living room where Lucy is watching TV and is laughing so hard he interrupts her. She is angry and threatens to beat her brother up.

Linus: There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin.

Patty (voiced by Lisa DeFaria) teases him as well. (At least his friends are so supportive and all. You know, in a not at all sort of a way).

Sally (voiced by Cathy Steinberg) asks Linus what he's doing, and he tells her about The Great Pumpkin. She hangs on to his every word.

Linus walks to the mailbox to mail his letter, but Lucy says he can't reach it and she isn't going to help him. He uses his blanket to lasso it open.

Charlie Brown is excited he got invited to Violet's Halloween party. But Lucy tells him it was a mistake. (Poor Charlie Brown).

Linus takes a sign that says "Welcome, Great Pumpkin" out to the patch.

Sally cuts holes in a sheet and then is scared by the ghost she created. Lucy is dressed as a witch, and Violet (voiced by Ann Altieri) is also dressed as a ghost. Charlie Brown is but with way too many holes because he has trouble with the scissors. Patty comes next, followed by PigPen (voiced by Gabrielle DeFaria Ritter). Snoopy is dressed as a WWI Flying Ace.

The kids leave to go trick-or-treating, but Linus stays in the patch to wait for The Great Pumpkin. Sally starts to leave with the others but turns back to say with Linus.

The kids get candy, and Lucy gets an extra piece for her brother each time. Charlie Brown gets a rock each time. ("I got a rock" is one of the best lines in this special).

The WWI Flying Ace flies his doghouse until it is shot down.

The kids finish trick-or-treating and head to the party, stopping at the pumpkin patch to laugh at Sally and Linus. Sally defends Linus to the others, but when they leave, she questions him.

The girls tell Charlie Brown to model for him. He takes it as a compliment until they use the back of his head to draw out how they want the pumpkin to look.

The WW1 Flying Ace is now on the ground, trying to avoid being shot as he travels.

The kids are bobbing for apples, and Lucy goes first. She grabs an apple, but Snoopy is in the water with the apple in his mouth as well. Lucy freaks out, having been kissed by a dog.

Schroder sits at his piano, and Snoopy stands next to it. Snoopy gives a performance while Schroder plays, showing dancing and emotion. Snoopy becomes too emotional and leaves the house crying.

Sally is getting cranky because the Great Pumpkin still hasn't come. Linus says he hears him coming, and Snoopy's head pops up. Linus passes out.

Linus: What happened? Did I faint? What did he leave us? Did he leave us any toys?
Sally: I WAS ROBBED! I SPENT THE WHOLE NIGHT WAITING FOR THE GREAT PUMPKIN WHILE I COULD HAVE BEEN OUT FOR TRICK or TREATS! HALLOWEEN IS OVER, AND I MISSED IT! YOU BLOCKHEAD! YOU KEPT ME UP ALL NIGHT WAITING FOR THE GREAT PUMPKIN, AND ALL THAT CAME WAS A BEAGLE!

Sally continues yelling at Linus as the others come to the pumpkin patch.

Sally: YOU OWE ME RESTRESTITUTION!

She shakes Linus and walks away. She has her arms folded and a mad look on her face.

Linus (to Charlie Brown): You heard about fury in a woman scorned, haven't you?
Charlie Brown: Yes, I guess I have.
Linus: Well, that's nothing compared to the fury of a woman treated out of tricks or treats.

Everyone leaves Linus. He asks them if they are gonna wait.

Linus: If the great pumpkin comes... Good grief...I said, "if." I meant when he comes...I'm doomed. One little slip like that can cause the Great Pumpkin to pass you by.

The alarm goes off in Lucy's room at 4:00 am, and she gets up and checks her brother's room. He still hasn't come inside. She goes out to the pumpkin patch and sees him lying on the ground, wrapped in his blanket, shivering. She walks him back into the house, takes off his shoes, and he lies in bed. She covers him up. (Aww, she's not a totally horrible sister after all).

The next day, Linus and Charlie Brown are talking at the wall. Charlie Brown says all he got was a bag full of rocks. He asks Linus if the Great Pumpkin showed up, and Linus tells him no. Charlie Brown says he's done a lot of stupid stuff in his life too, and Linus becomes angry and declares next year he'll find a better pumpkin patch and starts to rant.

The closing credits come up.

(This is one of my favorite Halloween specials. I always feel so bad for Charlie Brown).
