7th Heaven: Season 4- Episode 21: Love Stinks (Part 1)

Ruthie (Mackenzie Rosman) has been eating after-church donuts - before church.

Annie and Matt are talking before church. Heather is back in town, but Matt claims he and Heather are just friends (does anyone actually believe him), and he's still with Shauna. However, he's seen Heather, not Shauna, who is also back in town. He is frustrated his mother doesn't believe him.

Simon is concerned Deena isn't there. He and Annie go inside and see Ruthie, who has powder from a donut on her mouth but denies eating the donuts. Bert (Scott Terra) comes over to Ruthie and clearly has a crush on her. She, however, wants him to go away. (I feel bad for Bert, he's an adorable kid). They are partners for a school project, and he is overjoyed. She's like, "what ev."

Mary is outside getting Lucy, who is hiding from Andrew Nayloss "and his creepy parents." Lucy dated Andrew for a week but realized all she liked about him was kissing him.

Lucy offers to set her sister up with Shelley's brother, who is home from college, but Mary's not interested. She's still into Robbie Palmer.

Eric sees someone come inside the church, and Annie sees him looking, and she looks back, as does the rest of the family. It's Robbie (Adam LaVorgna) and what Lucy refers to as "his very good-looking friend."

The opening credits come up, and the theme song plays.

After church, Eric and Annie are in his office.

Eric: In all the churches in all the small towns in all the world, why did Robbie have to walk into mine?

Eric says he can't forgive Robbie for what she did. Mary's life is back on track, and they are concerned she will take Robbie back.

Robbie and Mary are outside talking, and he tells her that he wants to be a better person because of when she hit him after he tried to doink her on Valentine's Day.

Matt and Heather (Andrea Ferrell) are talking. He tells her he's going to see Shauna after church. He doesn't seem in a rush to leave Heather, and she isn't too happy he left.

Lucy sees the cute guy, and Andrew (Will Estes) comes over, and Lucy tries to get rid of him. The cute guy introduces himself as "Ronald (Brian Bowen), Rick and Robbie's step-brother. Andrew tells Ronald that he's Lucy's boyfriend. Lucy says it's not true. Ignoring Andrew, Ronald asks Lucy on a date to the movies, and she accepts.

Simon's friend Wade (Bryan Burke) comes over to Simon, who is playing with the twins inside the sanctuary. Wade tells him that Deena was with another guy at the mall.

Annie is making lunch at the house when Bert knocks on the door. Annie calls Ruthie down, then asks Bert if he wants a cookie. Bert explains his family is vegans.

Bert: My dad says we don't eat anything with a face.

She offers him juice, but he can't drink that; then she offers him water, and he tells her he isn't good with carbonated products, so it can't be fizzy. Ruthie comes down and asks him if he has the pictures they need for their project, and he lifts his backpack. They go upstairs.

Simon is in his room and calls Deena's house. Her dad, Mr. Stewart (Terry V. Hart), answers, sounding a bit annoyed. Simon has called four times, and she's not there, and her dad doesn't know why she wasn't at church but will tell him when she calls. When he hangs up, Deena (Nicole Cherié Saletta), who really is at home, thanks him.

Mr. Stewart: You really should talk to him. Tell him what's going on.
Deena: I can't, dad. I just can't.

Shauna (Maureen Flannigan) is out with Matt at the pool hall when Brett (Matt Farnsworth) from New York City shows up. Shauna is surprised to see him since he's supposed to be in NY working at the Brooklyn Free Clinic.

Mary takes Robbie back and kisses him.

Mary: Don't break my heart.
Robbie: Don't break my jaw.
Mary: Don't break my heart; I'll have no reason to break your jaw. (Best line of this episode).

Eric is working in his office at home. The phone rings, and it's Peter Simms (Jody Wood), Mary's guidance counselor at school. He says he sent a letter home with Mary regarding colleges. Eric thought Mary was going to Crawford and learned she never turned in acceptance forms. So, Mary has no school to go to, and Simms says she doesn't want to go to college in the fall.

Eric and Annie both come into the foyer where Mary is. Mary tells them about Robbie. Eric informs her that Mr. Simms called. Mary says she is not going to college. She didn't want them to find out that way but is happy they know now.

Ruthie is in her room with Bert. He is cutting a paper while staring at Ruthie. He tells her she's beautiful, like the pretty PowerPuff girl. He gives her a glass cat and asks her to be his girlfriend.

Ruthie: Why would I do that?
Bert: I give you the cat.

Brett is outside Shauna's apartment. She tells him that when she left New York, she told him that it was over between them. Brett says he loves her, and she tells him she loves Matt. However, Brett says he's not going anywhere.

Andrew is outside waiting for Lucy, who comes out with Happy to walk her.

Lucy: You're trespassing.
Andrew: Call a lawyer.
Lucy: Don't tempt me.

She tells him to give it up. They are not dating. Happy barks at him.

The doorbell rings, and Simon answers; it's Deena. He tries to kiss her, and she back away. He asks why she didn't meet him at the church and if it concerns the guy at the mall. Deena says that guy was her cousin, Robert. However, she thinks they should see other people.

Matt returns to his apartment. John (Chaz Lamar Shepherd) asks him how his date with Shauna went. As Matt talks about Shauna, he adds "Brett" to the end of each sentence.

Matt: And guess who just moved to Glen Oak for the summer?
John: Brett. (Wow! It's like John as ESP or something).

Matt says Brett isn't there because of NYC's lack of medical jobs. However, he's not jealous.

John: You're not jealous of Brett because you're no longer in love with Shauna.

John says that Matt is still in love with Heather. He tells Matt to be honest with Shauna and not let Heather escape.

Ruthie agrees to be Bert's girlfriend if he obeys her and brings her gifts. He agrees. (Kid, this should give you a clue Ruthie is not good enough to date you right now).

Eric and Mary are in the kitchen discussing their oldest daughter. They decide to go up and talk to Mary because she needs to explain why she isn't going to college.

Simon is outside with Deena. He asks if he did something wrong. She tells him it's over, and she's been wanting to dump him for a while. But she hopes they can be friends.

Simon: I don't want to be your friend. I want to be your boyfriend.
Deena: Not everything is about what you want.

Deena leaves with tears streaming down her face.

Mary and her parents go into Mary and Lucy's room. Mary informs them she's not changing her mind. Eric claims Mary lied about her paperwork. Mary claims she didn't lie because she took care of the paperwork by tossing it.

Annie: A lie by omission is still a lie.

Mary explains that everything changed when she got arrested and lost her scholarship. She doesn't know what she wants to do with her life and figures there's no reason to go into debt without a plan.

Mary: I need to figure out what I want. I need to find myself, and I'm not going to college to do it.

She leaves her room.

Heather goes to John and Matt's apartment. She asks Matt about Shauna. Matt says he's going to a movie with Shauna later. Heather tells Matt she's in love with him. John quickly leaves the apartments. Heather says she can't keep hiding her feelings. She tells him to have fun at the movies and then leaves Matt speechless.

Simon calls a girl from his school named Cynthia (Brenda Song). He says she knows everything that is going on in the 8th grade. He wants to know if Deena is seeing another boy.

Eric is taking out the trash when Robbie walks in. Eric claims that Robbie's going to church is a scam. Robbie says it's not. Eric says that Mary may be convinced Robbie is different, but Eric doesn't believe it and will be watching Robbie.

Eric: And uh....(points to the sky) He's watching you too, so watch out.

Mary comes out and tells her dad that her other gave Mary permission to go out with Robbie for ice cream. Eric goes back inside. Robbie tells Mary that her father hates him. Mary informs him that it's not all him; (Most, but not all). She informed her parents about her decision not to go to school. Robbie asks her why she's not going to college.

Mary: Because right now, the only thing I am sure of is that I want to spend as much time with you as possible.

She kisses him as they leave for their date.

Annie tells Ruthie that she heard about Ruthie and Bert. Ruthie says it's like having a dog; he does whatever she wants. Annie explains that Bert has feelings. She says a relationship is not about one person.

Ruthie: Bert doesn't want anything. He just wants to hang out with me and give me presents. And I'm okay with that. (Kid, ya haven't got a clue, but it's okay - you're eight).

Ronald says he's surprised that her parents allowed him to come over since they intensely dislike Robbie. She says they didn't like Rick much either. They discover they are both single and make out. Eric walks into the living room and clears his throat.

Lucy: Dad, hi.
Ronald: Hello, Reverend Camden; I've heard a lot about you.
Eric: I don't like your family. (Let it out, Eric, tell him how you feel).
Ronald: I just want you to know I'd never take Lucy to a motel.
Eric: That's reassuring. (brief pause) Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go put my head through a wall.

Eric leaves, and Lucy and Ronald return to their make-out session.

Eric goes into the kitchen and asks why she let Mary go out with Robbie.

Annie: We can't make her go to college; how can we make her stay home?

Eric tells his wife not to give up on Mary going to college.

Matt and Shauna are at the movies when they, in unison, tell the other, "I have something to tell you." Matt lets Shauna go first. She tells him that he returned to Glen Oak for him. Matt says he forgot what he had to say.

The phone rings at the Camden house, and Simon answers. It's Cynthia. She says Deena is dating an older boy. Cynthia suggests that Simon moves on. When she hangs up, Deena, who is also there, says Cynthia was very believable. Cynthia says Deena should tell Simon the truth. (Seriously, Deena, grow up). However, Deena wants Simon to hate her, so it will be easier for him to "let go."

Robbie tells Mary that he was accepted to Crawford. He suggests he could go to school there, and they can work on their relationship. He promises never to lie to her again. She says she trusts him, and she needs him.

Stella (Deborah Estelle Burke) is with Cheryl (Barret Swatek), Robbie's old girlfriend. They see Robbie, and Cheryl is not too happy to see Mary. Cheryl says she doesn't know who Mary is, but Robbie dumped her suddenly after three years last week. Stella suggests Cheryl tell Robbie off in front of his new girlfriend.

Cheryl: I've got a better idea. A much better idea. (This can't be good).

Back at the house, the kids are getting ready to head to school, except Simon, who rode his bike to school.

Mary eats breakfast, and Eric and Annie tell her she doesn't have to go to school. However, she must get a job and pay for room and board. Mary is angry that her parents will make her pay to live there. Mary says maybe she'll move out. After she leaves, Annie is concerned Mary might move out.

Eric: She doesn't have a job. She doesn't want a job. You have to have money to move, and right now, she doesn't even have money to stay.

Matt goes to Heather's mother's house. Donna (Meg Wittner), Heather's mother, answers the door. She says she hasn't seen Matt since Matt ruined Heather's wedding. (Technically, he didn't ruin it, he kept Heather from marrying a douchebag). She tells Matt not to hurt Heather.

Matt: I would never hurt Heather. Well, I...I...love her.
Donna: Sometimes, that's not a guarantee.

Heather comes outside, and Matt tells her that he loves her. He wants to break up with Shauna, and Heather is happy about that. She says Matt must be broken up with Shauna because he can't have them both. Heather tells him until he decides for sure that she's saying goodbye.

Some boys are picking on Ruthe for being Bert's girlfriend. Bert comes into the classroom, and she asks what he said about her.

Bert: That you love me.
Ruthie: I never said that.
Bert: But you said you'd be my girlfriend.
Ruthie: Yeah, so you'd do stuff for me.
Bert: That's the only reason you wanted to be my girlfriend?
Ruthie: (nods) Now tell everyone the truth.

Bert turns around.

Ruthie: What's wrong?

Bert turns back around, and everyone sees he is crying. One of the kids tells Ruthei she's in trouble for making Burt cry.

Simon goes to Deena's locker and gives her an early birthday present. She opens it, and it's a ring. He says even though she wants to see other people, he wants her to keep the ring.

Deena: I can't take the ring, and I don't wanna see other people. (Talk about your mixed signals).
Simon: Well, that doesn't make any sense.
Deena: I'm sorry, I gotta go.

She closes her locker and leaves him standing there.

Andrew goes to Lucy's locker and asks if she was "with him" last night. Andrew says that Ronald doesn't even know her. When Lucy claims Andrew doesn't know her well either, Andrew proves her wrong. However, he also tells her he's tired of waiting, so he's leaving her unless she stops him and walks away.

Lucy: Andrew.
Andrew (turns around): Yes. (silence). Man, you were this close.

He leaves Lucy standing there.

Cheryl goes to Robbie's house. He tells her that it's over. She informs him that she saw him last night with Mary. She says she was the last to know, then says actually Mary is the last to know. Robbie asks her not to say anything because he loves her.

Cheryl: Too bad, because after I talk to her, she's going to hate you.

Annie and Eric are kissing in the foyer.

The kids come home from school and tell their parents they don't want to talk about it. Mary, however, informs them that she and Robbie are going to be living together, but as roommates. Mary is ecstatic. Eric and Annie - not so much.

The closing credits come up.

(This was a good episode. It all connects from one person to the other very well).
